Coffee

(We use ground and vacuum sealed coffee from Taylors of Harrogate; in Ital are blurbs from the backs of the packaging describing the flavours in stock)

(A) Weak (strength 3)

(i) Colombia High Andes: Medium roast. lively with rich aroma

This medium-bodied coffee is grown in the foothills of the Andes, where perfect conditions allow the development of its character and spirit. The flavour bursts with lemony citrus notes and a hint of blackcurrant, followed by a rich nuttty finish. The Colombian farmers invest the Fairtrade social premiums in improving local schools and protecting forest where this delicious coffee grows.

(ii) Take It Easy: Low caffeine

New Yorkers are a pretty demanding bunch. And when it comes to coffee, they know just how they want it. Take It Easy is a combination of regular and decaffeinated coffee, inspired by a blend served in New York delis for office workers to enjoy all day long. Our version is a smooth flavourful half-caff to help you have a nice day, every day.

(iii) Lazy Sunday: Smooth and rich

An easygoing, aromatic blend created to enjoy over a lazy weekend brunch, but beautifully smooth any day of the week. Its harmonious combination of Central American and  African beans is so mild and moreish you can enjoy cup after cup - perfect for getting you through the Sunay papers.

(B) Medium (Strength 4)

(i) Colombia Excelso: Rich roast, well-balanced and lively

Our Colombian beans are roasted on the darker side of medium to bring out their rich, tantalising flavour. The coffee combines fruit and nut tones for a cup that is delicious at any time of the day.

(ii) Rich Italian: Deep and full-bodied

One of our original blends, Rich Italian was inspired by the Northern Italian tradition for full-bodied roasts. The care we take over the roasting process ensures the coffee retains its character, resulting in a luxuriously velvety cup without a hint of bitterness. Its deep flavours make Rich Italian a great coffee to serve at teh end of a delicious dinner.

(iii) Cafe Basilia: Smooth and rich

Blended with Bourbon and Mundo Novo beans from Brazil, Cafe Brasilia is brimming with Latin spirit and is the perfect convival coffee to share with friends. The blend is finished with a handful of African beans to add extra liveliness to this dark, rich and seductive coffee.

(iv) Decaffe: Water process, decaffeinated, rich roast

The pure water we use to gently remove the caffeine from Decaffe ensures its rich flavour is left intact. The result is a sweet blend of Latin American coffees with a smooth, full-bodied flavour that can be enjoyed from dawn to dusk.

Strong (strengths 5 and 6)

(i) Expresso: Intensely rich, dark roast

The coffee cognoscenti of Italy are famed for their expresson blends. Our Expresson combines Brazilian coffee for balance, Indonesian for chocoloate, Kenyan for sweetness and Ethiopean for a strong burst of flavour that's followed by a smooth, lingering finish.

(ii) Hot Lava Java: High caffeine, extra dark roast

Hot Lava Java is power house blend, made for those who love their coffee rich and  dark, with an intensed caffeine kick. We combine full-flavoured arabica beans from Java with Indian robusta beans famed for their high caffeine content, then roast them dangerously dark for an explosion of flavour that erupts on the tongue.

Tea

(A) Earl Grey (Twinnings)

(B) Camomile (Twinnings)

(C) Regular tea (Tetley)

** Breakfast is served in the dining room between 8.00am and 9.15am. Most of the products we use are from our local butcher who also makes some of the world’s yummiest pies. We also have fish or vegetarian options to cater to individual dietary needs and tastes. If guests could fill up the breakfast form and leave it on the counter the night before, it would help expedite service. But as nothing's etched in stone, guests are free to amend their orders in the morning if they wish to do so.

Dinner Menu

2 course dinner at min of £14 and max of £20 per person includes desert.

Hainanese chicken rice £18
Orginating from the Hainan province, rice is steamed with chicken stock (no msg), garlic and ginger, and served with steamed chicken in a specially brewed sauce. A home made chilli paste served on the side adds a sweet sour twang to the aromatic flavours of the chicken and rice.

Nasi lemak
£17
Nasi lemak is fragrant rice, which is cooked in coconut and pandan leaves. This is then served with an array of side dishes comprising deep fried anchovies, omelette, sliced cucumbers and a home made chilli paste that will give you a good run for your money.

Steam boat £20
Raw seafood and chicken (or any other meats) served sliced and ready to be thrown into a pot of pre-prepared stock along with Chinese cabbage. Diners pick the ingredients they want and dip them into the boiling stock and ladle them into their bowls once the ingredients are cooked. The soup is thus naturally flavoured without the use of msg. This is usually accompanied with rice or vermicelli.

Prawn noodle soup £16
The soup is cooked using rib bones and prawn heads, then ladled onto freshly boiled yellow noodles or vermicelli and served with large prawns and bean sprouts. This dish can be expensive depending on the market price of prawns.

Mee goreng £14
A spicy noodle dish fried with fish cake, kai lan (vegetable) and egg. Level of spiciness can vary as per request. Mee goreng in Malay means fried noodles.

Ala Carte

Satay
£8
Chicken, beef or pork pieces seasoned with fragrant spices - different to any satay you'll get at your regular restaurant or take away.

Mixed vegetables
£7
Carrots, young corn, celery and other vegetables stir fried and eaten with noodles or rice.

Sweet and sour pork £8
Crunch pork served in a slightly spicy sweet and sour sauce.

Leek and tofu £7
Stir fried leek and cripsy tofu. Suitable for vegetarians.

Singapore chilli crabs (seasonal) £18++
The availability of this dish is dependent on the types of crabs sold in  the markets. Cooked in chilli paste, this dish is a hot favourite with tourists and locals alike. It is usually eaten in restaurants by the sea. We're not that close to the sea but the flavour will wow you so much you'll forget about song birds, crashing waves and all that la la stuff.

Thai green chicken curry £8
You've had it at the Thai restaurants, or restaurants that claim to be Thai. We're not Thai but we love food. I'm sure we'll measure up.

Thai mango salad £7
The main ingredient of this dish is, well, mango - green ones. The flavour is refreshing and tangy and offers the adventurous tastebuds something to hang around for.

Thai vermicelli £9
There are many ways to cook vermicelli and this is one of the best. The flavours created by the blend of fish sauce and lime are unbelieveable. This dish is fried with squid and chicken. Not for the stout vegetarian heart, I'm afraid.

Black pepper prawns
£16++
It's just that, black pepper prawns. But the flavour is nothing short of fantabulous. You could eat the shells if you liked because that's how crunchy it will be.

Canton steamed fish £16++
If you like the fragrance that comes from Chinese rice wine mixed with soya sauce. This one's for you. This delicacy usually comes in the form of a sea bass garnished with Chinese vegetables and mushrooms.

** We use fresh ingredients wherever, whenever possible. Giving us advance notice of your intention to dine at Winifred's Rest will help us serve you dinner that pleases you and gratifies us. Availability of dishes depends very much on what the seasons and climates yield.
